Cause
Incorrect oil grade or degraded oil
Engine oil of the wrong viscosity, the wrong specification, or simply too old to do its job. On a modern engine this stops being a servicing question and becomes a mechanical one, because oil is no longer only a lubricant — it is a hydraulic fluid that operates variable valve timing phasers, chain tensioners, cylinder deactivation and variable-displacement oil pumps.
So the wrong viscosity produces faults that read as electrical or mechanical failures. Oil too thick responds sluggishly and a phaser fails to reach its commanded angle; oil too thin cannot hold pressure and the same phaser drifts. Neither sets an oil code — they set timing, actuator and pressure-control codes, and the solenoid gets replaced while the real cause is in the sump.
Degraded oil adds varnish, which is the mechanism behind a whole family of sticking-solenoid faults. Oil run long past its interval leaves deposits on precisely the small spool valves these systems depend on, holding them open or closed.
Specification is not the same as viscosity, and it matters as much. A diesel with a particulate filter needs low-ash oil; ordinary oil fills the filter with ash far faster. Check what the manufacturer specifies rather than what the bottle claims to suit, and treat an oil change as a real diagnostic step rather than a formality.
Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.
Some of these codes mean you should stop driving
4 of the 19 codes this can cause indicate a fault where continuing to drive risks damage or is unsafe. Which one you have matters more than the cause does — read the code's own page before deciding.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
