P250B: Engine Oil Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
What to do
Ask whether this car has a dipstick, and if it does, check the level yourself on level ground with the engine off for a few minutes. On many modern cars there is no dipstick at all, which is exactly why a faulty level sensor matters — it leaves you with no way to check the one fluid that destroys an engine when it runs out.
Mention where you normally park. These sensors need the car level and settled, so a sloping driveway produces false readings with a perfectly good sensor.
Say whether the level has been falling, or rising. On a diesel a rising level is a genuine warning — it means fuel is getting into the oil — and it is a different and more urgent finding than a sensor fault.
Until it is fixed, treat the oil warning light as the only indication you have and act on it immediately.
What this code means
The engine oil level sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but does not fit.
This code matters more than a sensor fault usually would, and the reason is that on many modern cars there is no dipstick. The electronic reading is the only way anyone can know the oil level — so a sensor that lies leaves the driver with no way to check the one fluid that destroys an engine when it runs out.
Understanding how these sensors work explains most of the false readings. The common type is thermal: a wire is heated briefly and the rate at which it cools indicates whether it is immersed in oil or hanging in air. Others are ultrasonic, timing an echo off the oil surface. Neither can read a moving surface, so both require the vehicle to be level and to have stood for several minutes after switch-off.
That requirement is behind a large share of these codes. A reading taken while the oil is still draining back reads low; a car parked on a slope reads wrong in whichever direction it leans. The module usually accounts for this and sometimes cannot.
Where the reading is genuinely implausible, the sensor or its wiring is the subject — and oil sludge coating a thermal element insulates it, which is a mechanical fault presenting as an electrical one.
Do not stop at the sensor. A level that is genuinely wrong is the important finding, and a diesel whose level has risen is reporting fuel dilution rather than a sensor fault.
