What to do

Mention any rattle or knock from the engine for a second or two immediately after starting, even if it has been there for a long time and you had stopped noticing it. That noise is the most useful clue for this fault — it is the camshaft mechanism moving before oil pressure has locked it.

Say whether it is worse after the car has stood overnight than after a short stop. Oil draining back is part of this, and that pattern helps confirm it.

Say when the oil was last changed and what grade. Degraded or wrong-viscosity oil delays the pressure this mechanism needs, and an oil change with the correct grade is a genuine step here.

Do not leave a startup rattle indefinitely. The same low oil pressure at startup is hard on the timing chain, and that is a much larger repair.

What this code means

The intake camshaft on bank 1 was more advanced than the cold-start strategy wanted.

This code turns on a piece of engineering most people never hear about: the phaser lock pin. A variable valve timing phaser is moved by oil pressure — and at cranking speed there is almost no oil pressure. So a phaser left free would drift wherever the valve springs pushed it, and the engine would try to start with unknown valve timing.

The answer is a spring-loaded pin that locks the phaser at a defined park position whenever oil pressure is low. Oil pressure releases it once the engine is running. That park position is chosen to give a reliable start and, on many engines, the retarded timing the cold-start strategy wants.

Over-advanced during cold start therefore points at that pin. A worn pin, a weakened spring, or a bore worn oval lets the phaser leave its park position before oil pressure should have released it.

The audible clue is distinctive and worth asking about: a brief rattle or knock for a second or two on startup, which is the phaser moving against its stops before pressure builds. Owners usually accept it as normal long before a code appears.

Oil is the other half of the story. Degraded or wrong-grade oil delays pressure at the pin, and thin oil drains back overnight — which is why this fault is often worse after the car has stood.
