P2283: Injector Control Pressure Sensor Circuit

What to do

Expect hard starting, rough running or a no-start. The important thing to know about this engine is that the injectors are driven by engine oil pressure, not by the fuel pump — so a starting problem here is very often an oil problem, and chasing the fuel system is the common wasted effort. Say when the oil was last changed and what grade went in; on these engines that is diagnostic information rather than service history. Ask for the sensor connector to be checked for oil in it, which is a frequent cause and means the wiring needs attention as well as the sensor.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit of the injection control pressure sensor. This code only exists on a hydraulically actuated injection system, and what that means is surprising enough to be the whole point of the page: on these engines the fuel is injected by oil pressure, not by the fuel pump.

How the system works. The fuel system delivers fuel to the injectors at fairly modest pressure. It does not do the injecting. Above each injector sits a small hydraulic piston, and a separate high-pressure oil circuit — engine oil, raised to a few thousand psi by its own pump — drives that piston down to generate the injection pressure. The module opens a valve, oil pushes, fuel is forced through the nozzle. Fuel is the payload; oil is the force.

Three consequences follow, and every one of them sends people the wrong way:

  • A no-start is usually an oil problem, not a fuel problem. The engine can have perfect fuel supply, a full tank, a good filter and healthy injectors, and still not fire, because nothing is pushing. Fuel gets chased first because the symptom looks like fuel starvation. It is covered at P2291.
  • Oil condition is a diagnostic question, not a maintenance one. The oil is a hydraulic working fluid here, so viscosity and condition directly determine whether the engine starts — particularly when cold, where thick or degraded oil cannot move fast enough through the system. "When was the oil last changed, and with what grade?" is a genuine first question on these engines in a way it is on almost no others.
  • Overdue or wrong-grade oil is a cause of hard starting, not merely a contributor to long-term wear.

The sensor's own characteristic failure is worth knowing. Oil wicks along the harness into the connector and eventually into the sensor body, which gives readings that drift, stick or disappear. An oil-filled connector is a common and easily missed finding, and it means the harness usually needs attention too — fitting a new sensor into an oil-soaked plug just contaminates the new one.
