What to do

Say when the oil was last changed and what grade went in. The camshaft mechanism is moved by oil pressure, and cold oil is thick and slow — so degraded or wrong-viscosity oil produces this fault at exactly the moment it is hardest, and an oil change is a genuine step here.

Ask for the camshaft oil control solenoid's filter screen to be cleaned. It is a fine mesh that blocks with sludge and is the commonest cause in this family.

Treat it as an early warning. A mechanism that only fails when cold will fail warm eventually — and today the repair is likely a screen, where later it is a phaser.

Mention any rattle for a second or two on startup, which points at the mechanism rather than the oil.

What this code means

The intake camshaft on bank 1 did not reach the timing the cold-start strategy asked for.

This is the performance member of the pair, and it differs from its over-advanced sibling in an important way. Over-advanced says the camshaft went somewhere it should not have. This says it did not get where it was told to go — which is a control problem rather than a lock-pin one.

Cold start is the hardest moment for a phaser and the reason is simply oil. The phaser is moved by oil pressure, and cold oil is thick and slow. A mechanism with any restriction in its path — a partly blocked solenoid screen, a worn phaser, a marginal oil pump — can meet its target perfectly once warm and fail to meet it at all in the first thirty seconds.

Which makes this code an early warning for the ordinary camshaft timing family. A phaser that fails only when cold today is one that will fail warm later, so it is worth acting on while the repair is still a solenoid screen rather than a phaser.

The camshaft's role in warm-up is also worth knowing. Timing the valves for maximum exhaust heat is part of lighting the catalyst off — so this code sits alongside the idle, ignition and boost members of the family, all serving the same end. Where the exhaust temperature code is stored too, this is very likely its cause.

Check the oil and the solenoid screen first, as with everything in the phaser family.
