C0049: Brake Fluid Level

Do not keep driving

Check the brake fluid reservoir now, before driving. If it is low: worn brake pads explain a slow drop, but a leak is the other explanation and it ends with the pedal going to the floor. Look behind each wheel and under the car for wetness. If the level is well down, or the pedal feels soft or travels further than usual, do not drive it — have it recovered.

What this code means

The brake fluid level is low, or the circuit reporting it is faulty.

Treat this as real until proved otherwise. Low brake fluid has exactly two causes and one of them is serious.

The benign cause is brake pad wear. As pads wear the caliper pistons sit further out, and the fluid that fills the space behind them comes from the reservoir. The level falls slowly over tens of thousands of miles, and it comes back when new pads push the pistons home. A level near minimum on worn pads is the system working as designed.

The serious cause is a leak, and a hydraulic brake leak does not get better. It ends with the pedal going to the floor, usually with no more warning than this light.

Which it is takes about a minute to determine. Look at the reservoir. Look at the inside of each wheel and at the ground where the car parks for a wet patch or a damp, oily film. Then look at the pads: if they still have material left, the fluid went somewhere.

Do not simply top it up and drive on. Topping up hides the only warning you get, and on worn pads it causes an overflow when the pads are replaced.

Fluid is also hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the air over years, which lowers its boiling point and lets it vapourise under hard use, giving a soft pedal exactly when braking hardest. That is why it has a replacement interval at all.
