The pedal sinks further than it should, feels springy underfoot, or slowly travels toward the floor while held.
A soft pedal means something compressible is in a system designed to carry only liquid. Brake fluid does not compress; air does, and so does fluid that has boiled into vapour. So the pedal is telling you the hydraulics have been breached or overheated, and this is the more serious of the two common pedal complaints.
Three causes account for most of it. Air in the lines, usually after work on the system or from a leak drawing air in. A leak, which also drops the fluid level and does not improve. And boiled fluid — brake fluid absorbs water from the air over years, which lowers its boiling point until hard use turns it to vapour, classically on a long descent.

Treat it as urgent. Check the fluid level, and if the pedal travels a long way or keeps sinking, do not drive the car — have it recovered.
