Brake warning light illuminated
The red brake warning lamp is lit — a different and more serious signal than the amber ABS light.
Colour is doing real work here and it is worth knowing. Amber usually means an assistance system has switched off and the ordinary brakes are unaffected. Red means the braking system itself wants attention, and on most cars it reports three things: the parking brake being on, a low fluid level, and a hydraulic pressure failure.
Check the obvious one first — the handbrake or electric parking brake not fully released, which is the commonest and most harmless cause.
If it is not that, check the fluid level before driving. Low fluid is either pad wear, which is normal and slow, or a leak, which is not and which ends with the pedal going to the floor.
