C0072: Brake Temperature Too High
What to do
If this came up on a long downhill or during repeated hard braking, stop somewhere safe and let the brakes cool — twenty minutes, without applying the handbrake. Brakes this hot can fade badly and the pedal can go soft. On descents use a lower gear so the engine slows the car. If it appeared during ordinary driving, suspect a binding brake — feel for one wheel much hotter than the others — and have it looked at before driving further.
What this code means
The brake temperature is above the expected limit.
This is a real physical condition, not a sensor complaint, and it is the code in this range most worth acting on immediately.
Brakes work by turning motion into heat, and they can only get rid of it so fast. Sustained braking — a long descent, repeated hard stops, towing — puts heat in faster than the discs can shed it. Past a point the pad material stops gripping and the fluid can boil, which puts gas in a system designed to carry liquid. Gas compresses; the pedal goes soft or to the floor.
That is brake fade, and it does not announce itself gently. It arrives on the corner after the one where the brakes still worked.
A dragging brake produces the same code with no provocation at all — a seized caliper slide, a stuck piston, a corroded handbrake cable or a collapsed flexible hose acting as a one-way valve. If this appeared during ordinary driving rather than a hard descent, look for a binding brake, and expect a hot wheel and a smell.
What to do about heat while driving: on a long descent, select a lower gear and let the engine hold the car back rather than riding the brakes, and brake firmly and briefly instead of continuously. Do not park with the handbrake on immediately after — heat soaks into the discs afterwards and can bond the pads.
