C0529: Steering Angle Sensor Module Missing Calibration
What to do
Expect the stability control light to be on, and drive as though the car has none — because it has.
The likely cause is something that has just been done to the car. A wheel alignment, steering or suspension work, a battery disconnection, or airbag and steering column work all lose the sensor's idea of where straight-ahead is.
If your car was aligned or had steering work recently, go back to whoever did it. This is usually a calibration step that was missed, not a fault — and it is a procedure rather than a part, so it should not cost much.
In the meantime the car steers and brakes normally. What you have lost is the electronic help that intervenes when a car starts to slide, so leave more room in the wet and avoid sudden corrections.
What this code means
The steering angle sensor module has no stored calibration.
A steering angle sensor measures where the wheel is pointed, and "missing calibration" means it knows the angle but not which angle is straight ahead.
That reference is learned, not built in. The module has to be told the centre position, and it loses that knowledge whenever the relationship changes: a battery disconnection on some designs, a steering rack or column replaced, an airbag or clockspring job, or — most commonly — a four-wheel alignment, where the steering wheel ends up centred at a different rack position than before.
Stability control cannot work without it. The system compares where you are pointing against how the car is actually rotating; with no zero reference the first number is meaningless, so it switches off rather than intervene on a guess.
The repair is a procedure rather than a part, and that is worth knowing before anybody quotes for a sensor. Depending on the vehicle it is a scan-tool routine, a defined sequence of lock-to-lock turns, or a short drive in a straight line. A car that has just been aligned and now shows a stability light very often needs nothing more than that.
