P02EE: Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit Range/Performance
What to do
Ask for the injector connector and its wiring to be inspected and measured before the injector is replaced. These connectors sit on the engine in constant heat and vibration, and a corroded or loose terminal produces exactly this code with a perfectly good injector — at a tiny fraction of the cost.
Expect the engine to misfire or run rough, and possibly to go into reduced power mode. That is normal for this fault.
Mention any recent work on or around the engine, since a connector disturbed and not fully latched is a common cause.
Do not drive it for long in this state. A cylinder that is not firing properly puts unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which can damage the catalytic converter or particulate filter — a much larger bill than the original fault.
What this code means
The electrical behaviour of cylinder 1's injector circuit is wrong, without being open or short.
Range/performance on an injector circuit is a more specific measurement than it sounds, and knowing what the module actually watches makes it far easier to diagnose. An injector is a coil or a piezo stack, and when the module drives it, the current builds in a characteristic shape. The module measures that shape — how fast current rises, when the needle-lift inflection appears, how the field collapses when the drive is removed.
A healthy injector produces a recognisable curve. A failing one produces a valid but wrong curve — the circuit conducts, so it is not open; it does not conduct excessively, so it is not shorted; but the waveform says the coil or stack is not what it should be.
Which points at three things, in order.
- Resistance in the circuit — a corroded connector or a strained terminal adds resistance that slows the current rise. This is the commonest cause and the cheapest.
- A degrading injector winding or piezo stack, which genuinely changes the electrical characteristic.
- A failing driver stage in the module, which is real but rare and should be the last conclusion.
Injector connectors live in heat and vibration directly on the engine, so terminal fatigue is ordinary rather than exceptional. Inspect and measure at the connector before condemning an injector that costs many times more.
