P062B: Internal Control Module Fuel Injector Control Performance
What to do
Ask for the injectors themselves to be tested before any module is replaced. A shorted injector can destroy the driver circuit inside the module — and fitting a new module without finding that short destroys the new one too.
Expect rough running or a misfire, and possibly reduced power.
Ask whether the engine has a separate injector control module, because on some vehicles that is the part at fault rather than the main engine module, and it is usually cheaper.
Do not drive it for long in this state. Unburnt fuel from a cylinder that is not firing properly can damage the catalytic converter or particulate filter, which costs considerably more than the original repair.
What this code means
The module's internal injector driver circuitry has failed a self-check.
This is a fault inside the module rather than out on the harness, and telling the two apart is the whole point of the code existing. An injector circuit code names a cylinder and points outward at wiring or the injector itself. This one points inward — the module has tested its own output stages and found them wrong.
Injector drivers work hard, which is why they fail. They switch high currents inductively, many times a second, and every switch dumps energy back into the driver as the injector's field collapses. They run hot and they are among the most stressed parts of the module.
The commonest external cause is worth eliminating first, because it destroys the replacement too. A shorted injector drags its driver down and can take it out. Fitting a new module without finding the short simply burns the new driver — so measure the injectors before condemning the module.
Look for a per-cylinder injector code stored alongside. If one is present, that cylinder's injector is the likely culprit and this code is the damage it caused.
On engines with a separate injector control module, the fault may be in that unit rather than the engine module — and note that on some vehicles the injector calibration codes live there, so they must be transferred when it is replaced or every cylinder ends up mistrimmed.
