What to do
Ask for the connector to be cleaned and dried before the sensor is replaced. This sensor sits in the intake manifold — the sootiest, oiliest part of the induction system on an engine with exhaust gas recirculation — and contamination in the plug is a common cause.
Ask why it got dirty. A leaking breather or a heavily coked intake will contaminate a replacement the same way, so the underlying condition matters as much as the part.

An oxygen sensor in the intake surprises people, and the reason it is there is genuinely elegant. Recirculated exhaust gas has had its oxygen burned out of it. Fresh air has not. So measuring the oxygen content of the intake charge tells the module directly what proportion of it is recirculated exhaust — the EGR rate, measured rather than estimated.
That matters because the older method is an inference. Working EGR rate out from airflow and manifold pressure means compounding several sensors' errors, and modern diesels run EGR rates high enough that the imprecision costs real emissions. A sensor in the intake removes the guesswork.
A signal pinned low is an electrical statement rather than a claim about the air — these are specified so that even zero oxygen keeps a margin above zero volts. So look for a short to ground, an open, or a collapsed reference supply.
The location supplies its own trap. This sensor sits in the intake manifold, which on an EGR-equipped engine is the sootiest, oiliest part of the induction system. Its connector collects exactly what the EGR valve deposits, and oil mist from the breather wicks into it — so clean and dry the connector before condemning the sensor.
