What to do
Ask for the connector to be cleaned and dried before any part is replaced. This sensor simply checks that the breather hose is plugged in, and oil mist creeping into its connector is the commonest cause — often the entire repair.
Ask for the hose itself to be checked at the same time. This sensor only detects whether the hose is connected, not whether it is split — so a cracked hose passes the test while still venting oil vapour and leaning out the mixture.
Mention any oil leaks, oil consumption or a whistling noise from the engine bay.
The car will usually drive normally, but it is worth fixing since the emissions self-checks will not complete.
What this code means
The sensor that detects whether the crankcase ventilation hose is connected is reading below its valid range.
This sensor exists for a specific regulatory reason and its design follows from that. Emissions rules require the vehicle to notice if the crankcase breather is removed, so manufacturers had to find a way to detect a plastic hose being off. The usual solution is deliberately simple: a small circuit completed through the hose connection itself — often a resistor or a shorting link in the connector — so that unplugging the hose breaks or changes the circuit.
That simplicity is what makes this code readable. The system is not measuring pressure or flow; it is checking a connection. So the fault is nearly always electrical and the diagnosis is short.
Reading low means a short to ground, and the causes are ordinary for a connector on top of an engine:
- Oil. These connectors sit where breather oil mist collects, and oil wicking into the connector bridges the terminals.
- Water, from a leaking cowl or a washed engine bay.
- A chafed wire against the manifold or a bracket.
Clean and dry the connector before condemning anything. On this circuit that is often the entire repair, and the part — where it is even available separately — is usually bundled with the hose assembly.
Check the hose itself while you are there. The sensor reports connection, not condition, so a split hose passes this test perfectly.
