Engine is using oil between services
The level falls noticeably between changes with nothing on the driveway to account for it. Oil that leaves without leaking has been burnt, and where it burnt narrows the diagnosis: past the piston rings, which usually shows as blue smoke under load; past the valve stem seals, which shows as a puff on startup after standing; or straight into the inlet through the crankcase breathing system, which shows as nothing visible at all and is the one most often missed. Some consumption is normal and manufacturers publish a figure — worth finding before assuming a fault.

What this usually means
Oil that leaves without leaking has been burnt, and where it burnt narrows the diagnosis. Three routes, each with its own visible signature:
- Past the piston rings, which usually shows as blue smoke under load;
- Past the valve stem seals, which shows as a puff on startup after standing;
- Straight into the inlet through the crankcase breathing system, which shows as nothing visible at all — and is the one most often missed.
That third route deserves the attention. An engine builds pressure in its crankcase and is designed to breathe it away into the inlet; when the separator that should return the oil mist fails, the engine drinks its own oil through the induction with no smoke and no leak. It is the version people search hardest for and find last, because there is nothing to see.
Some consumption is normal and manufacturers publish a figure — often around a litre per thousand kilometres on engines nobody would call faulty. Find that figure before assuming a fault, because a great deal of worry and expense is spent on consumption that is within specification.
Measure properly before diagnosing. Level checked cold on level ground, same spot, same interval, recorded — because dipstick technique accounts for more apparent consumption than most faults do.
And check the easy causes first: an oil grade thinner than specified, an overfilled sump, and a car driven hard rather than gently all raise consumption with nothing worn at all.
