P0620: Generator Control Circuit
What to do
Usually driveable. Watch for a battery warning light, and have the charging voltage measured at the battery with the engine running rather than assuming the alternator has failed — on these systems the command circuit is a common culprit.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit through which the engine module controls the alternator. On older vehicles an alternator regulated itself entirely; on modern ones the module commands the charging voltage, so it can reduce alternator load during acceleration, raise it on the overrun to recover energy, and vary it with battery temperature and state of charge.
That control link is why a charging fault can now be a wiring or module problem rather than an alternator problem. An alternator that tests fine on the bench may charge incorrectly on the vehicle because the command never reaches it — worth knowing before a working alternator is replaced.
