P0709: Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit Intermittent
What to do
The fault comes and goes, which makes it tempting to ignore — but the symptoms typically get more frequent rather than going away. Mention exactly when it happens: over bumps, on hard acceleration, or when moving the selector.
What this code means
The range signal drops out or jumps briefly and then returns. Intermittent faults on this circuit are usually mechanical in origin rather than electronic: a connector that has lost its seal, a harness that flexes as the gearbox moves on its mounts, or a sensor track that breaks contact only at one point in its travel.
What makes it worth catching rather than clearing is that the fault it eventually becomes is not intermittent. Recording the signal while an assistant moves the selector slowly through every position, and again while the engine is loaded against its mounts, will usually provoke it.
