Cause
Faulty transmission range sensor
The switch telling the vehicle which gear the selector is in. It governs far more than the gearbox — starter inhibit, reversing lights, and on many cars stop-start and shift scheduling — so the reported symptoms often have nothing to do with each other, and a car that will not crank in Park but will in Neutral is describing this exactly.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.
