Gear selector position displayed incorrectly
The dashboard shows a gear other than the one selected, shows nothing, or flashes between positions. Rarely arrives alone, because the same switch feeds the starter interlock and the reverse lights — so the useful thing to report is whether the engine still cranks in park and whether the reverse lights work. What this usually means
This rarely arrives alone, and what accompanies it is the fastest route to the fault. The same switch that tells the display which gear is selected also feeds the starter interlock and the reverse lights — so whether the engine still cranks in park, and whether the reverse lights work, identifies the fault far faster than the display does.
On a cable-operated selector the component is a transmission range switch on the gearbox, moved by the selector shaft. It wears, it corrodes, and it goes out of adjustment — and because its contacts are a set of positions rather than a continuous track, it typically fails in one selector position while the others are fine. That is why the display flickers between two gears as the lever passes a worn contact.
A selector cable out of adjustment produces the same display fault with nothing electrically wrong. The lever says one thing and the transmission sits slightly out of that position, so the switch reports honestly what it sees.
