P0830: Clutch Pedal Switch A Circuit
What to do
Watch for stop-start no longer working, cruise control refusing to engage, or the engine being reluctant to crank — all three read this switch, and any of them appearing alongside this code is the same fault rather than three.
What this code means
A fault in the first of the clutch pedal switches. Modern manual vehicles fit two, and the reason is worth understanding because it explains the whole P0830–P0835 family.
One switch cannot be trusted to fail safely. A single switch that sticks closed reports the clutch permanently depressed, and nothing about that reading looks wrong from inside the module. So a second switch is added, arranged to operate in the opposite sense — as one closes the other opens — which means the module can check them against each other. Two switches that both say "pressed", or both say "released", describe a state that cannot physically exist, and the fault becomes detectable instead of silent.
That redundancy is why these codes exist at all, and why a single switch failure is usually caught early rather than after it has caused a problem.
The systems reading these switches are more numerous than most drivers expect: the starter interlock, cruise control cancellation, and on almost every recent manual the automatic stop-start system.
