P0918: Gear Shift Position Circuit A Intermittent

What to do

An occasional failed or lurching gear change that then works normally is this fault rather than the gearbox's character. Note whether it happens when hot or over rough surfaces, and get it seen before it becomes permanent — a change that fails completely can leave the car between gears.

What this code means

The gear shift position signal drops out or jumps briefly. The module is closing a position loop around it during the shift itself, so a momentary loss lands mid-movement and the change fails part-way — usually recovering on a second attempt a moment later.

That produces the characteristic complaint of a failing automated manual: an occasional lurch or hesitation during an otherwise normal change, more frequent as the fault develops, and completely absent when the car is inspected cold in a workshop.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
