What to do

As P0A81 — nothing feels wrong while the pack loses half its cooling. Worth fixing before hot weather rather than after, and worth cleaning both fans while access is open.

What this code means

The second battery cooling fan's control circuit has failed open.

Larger packs move more heat than one fan can carry, so they carry two or more — and the fan 2 family mirrors fan 1 at P0A81–P0A85 exactly. Everything there applies: the circuit codes are electrical diagnoses, the dusty-fan caveat holds, and a pack running on half its cooling ages faster than a managed one even though nothing feels different from the driver's seat.

One addition specific to multi-fan packs: with fan 1 still working, the pack may hold safe temperatures in mild conditions and only run hot under summer load — so this code plus a heat wave is a worse combination than the code alone suggests.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
