P0E71: Generator Torque Delivered Performance
What to do
Expect the engine to rev oddly, hunt, or race without the car accelerating in proportion. It will feel like a transmission fault and on this drivetrain that is what it is — but the part involved is the generator and its electronics, not a gearbox. Mention any recent hybrid system work; a skipped calibration produces this.
What this code means
The torque the generator actually delivered does not match what was asked of it.
This is an outcome code, and the corpus draws that line repeatedly: a circuit code says an instrument is unreachable, an outcome code says the machine did not do the job. Everything upstream can test good and this can still be stored.
On a hybrid the generator is doing something more subtle than making electricity. In a power-split transmission it also holds the engine's speed — the planetary gearset locks engine, generator and wheels into a fixed relationship (the argument is at P0C2F), so the generator's torque is what decides what engine speed the car runs at for a given road speed. It is the continuously variable transmission, implemented as a machine rather than as belts and pulleys.
Which means a torque shortfall here is not felt as weak charging — it is felt as the transmission behaving oddly. Engine speed that hunts, revs that flare and do not translate into acceleration, or a car that pulls away with the engine racing. Those are transmission complaints, and on this drivetrain the transmission is a generator.
The realistic causes are the inverter driving it, the current sensors that tell the inverter what it is delivering (P0E00), or the position calibration at P0DFC — a machine whose rotor position is misjudged produces less torque for the same current, which is exactly this code.
