P2553: Throttle/Fuel Inhibit A Circuit Range/Performance

What to do

If the engine has cut out while driving, treat this as urgent — the steering and brakes become much heavier when the engine stops, and this fault can do it without warning. Mention any aftermarket alarm, tracker or remote-start system fitted to the car, whether or not it still works: those are wired into exactly this circuit and are a common cause that gets overlooked because they are not on the vehicle's own wiring diagrams. The engine itself is very unlikely to be the problem.

What this code means

The inhibit signal is electrically valid but inconsistent — asserted while the engine is running normally, or disagreeing with what the immobiliser reports over the data bus. What the inhibit is for is at P2552.

The failure mode this most often describes is intermittent rather than permanent, and that is what makes it dangerous rather than merely inconvenient: an inhibit that asserts itself briefly while the vehicle is moving cuts the engine. Power steering assistance and brake servo assistance both depend on the engine running, so a cut at speed is a genuine safety matter rather than a stalling nuisance.

An aftermarket alarm or tracker wired into this circuit is a frequent cause and a frequently overlooked one, because it is not part of the vehicle as built and does not appear in its wiring diagrams.
