P2552: Throttle/Fuel Inhibit A Circuit

What to do

The usual picture is a car that cranks normally and will not start, or one that starts and cuts out immediately. The important point is that this is not a fuel system fault — the engine is being told to withhold fuel, and it is doing as it is told. Before anything is bought: if the car has had any sort of impact, even a kerb or a low-speed knock, find out whether it has an inertia fuel cut-off switch and whether it has tripped. Most have a reset button, it costs nothing, and it is the single most common free fix for this code. After that, the immobiliser and its wiring are the place to look, not the pump.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit by which another system commands the engine module to stop making power — close the throttle, cut fuel, or both.

Where the torque management request asks the engine to make less, this one tells it to make none, and the difference is that an inhibit is not a negotiation. The systems that use it are the ones whose decisions must override the driver:

  • The immobiliser and anti-theft system, which allows the engine to crank and refuses to let it run for a key it does not recognise. On many vehicles the immobiliser does not touch the starter at all — it lets the car crank exactly as normal and simply withholds fuel, which is deliberate, because a car that will not crank invites a jump start while a car that cranks and will not catch invites nothing.
  • A crash or inertia sensor, cutting fuel after an impact so that a running pump cannot feed a leak. This is a genuine safety function and it is the reason the circuit exists on vehicles with no anti-theft requirement at all.
  • Fleet, remote-disable and commercial shutoff installations, where a third party can immobilise the vehicle.

The consequence when the circuit is faulty is a car that cranks perfectly and will not run, on an engine with nothing wrong with it. There is no fuel and no spark because the module has been told to withhold them, and it obeys and files the fault against this circuit rather than against the fuel system — so a stored inhibit code alongside a no-start is pointing away from pumps, filters, injectors and crank sensors, not towards them.

One check is free and worth doing before anything else: if the vehicle has been in any impact, however minor, an inertia switch may have tripped, and most have a reset button. Kerbing a wheel hard enough has been known to do it.
