Immobiliser
Authorises the engine module to allow the engine to run, by reading a transponder in the key through an antenna ring around the ignition barrel. Its characteristic failure is a car that cranks normally and either refuses to fire or starts and stops within a second — a pattern distinctive enough to separate it from fuel or spark faults immediately. Deliberately resistant to diagnosis, since it exists to prevent theft, so meaningful work needs manufacturer tooling and proof of ownership. Always try the spare key first.
