P2556: Engine Coolant Level Sensor/Switch Circuit

What to do

The car will drive normally and nothing will feel wrong. What has stopped working is the low coolant warning, which matters because the temperature gauge is not a substitute for it — the gauge measures coolant, so once the level falls past its sensor it can read perfectly normal while the engine overheats. Until it is fixed, check the coolant level yourself every couple of weeks, on a cold engine, against the marks on the expansion tank. That takes a minute and covers the gap. Get the sensor and its connector looked at rather than leaving it indefinitely.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit of the sensor or switch that reports how much coolant is in the system. The sensor is normally a float or a conductivity probe in the expansion tank, and on many vehicles it is a simple two-state switch rather than a continuous measurement.

This is the only thing on the vehicle that can tell anyone coolant has left the system, and that deserves stating plainly because the instrument people rely on instead cannot do it. The temperature gauge measures the temperature of coolant. Once the level drops below the temperature sensor, that sensor sits in air and steam rather than liquid — and air conducts heat poorly, so it reports what the air pocket is doing rather than what the metal is doing. A gauge can read normal, or fall, while the engine is genuinely cooking. The full argument is at P2560.

So a fault here is not merely a missing convenience. It removes the warning that stands between a slow leak and a warped cylinder head, and it removes it silently.

The ordinary causes are the ordinary ones — the connector, the wiring, and a sensor whose float has stuck or whose probe has furred up with deposits after years in a system that was topped up with tap water.
