What this usually means
Combined with a high temperature reading this is an overheating engine and warrants stopping immediately. Every further mile risks a warped head or a failed gasket, which is a different order of repair from the hose that caused it.
Steam, or a sweet smell, means escaping coolant — and the sweetness is the giveaway, because nothing else under a bonnet smells like it. A driver who reports a sweet smell has already narrowed the fault to the cooling system without meaning to.
Where the steam is coming from tells you a great deal, but do not look for it while it is hot. Let the engine cool, then pressure-test cold: the leak shows itself with the engine stopped, safely, and at a pressure you control.
Coolant on a hot exhaust manifold produces a dramatic amount of steam from a very small leak, which is why the visual severity is a poor guide to the size of the fault. A single weeping hose clip can look like a catastrophe.
The smell without visible steam is worth taking as seriously, because it points at a slow leak evaporating before it can drip — most often at a hose end, a heater matrix, or a plastic housing that seeps only when hot and pressurised.
Do not open the expansion tank cap. The system is pressurised to raise the coolant's boiling point, so releasing it hot flashes the contents to steam. Wait until the engine is cool enough to hold a hand on the top hose.
