P0217: Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition
Do not keep driving
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off. Do not open the coolant cap on a hot engine — the system is pressurised and the release causes serious scalding. Let it cool completely before checking coolant level, and have the vehicle recovered rather than driving on in the hope of reaching a workshop.
What this code means
The engine has exceeded its safe operating temperature. This is not a sensor plausibility code — the module believes the engine is genuinely overheating, and it is right often enough that it must be treated as real until proven otherwise. Overheating destroys engines quickly and expensively: head gaskets fail, aluminium heads warp, and in the worst case pistons seize. The cost of stopping is always lower than the cost of continuing.
