Coolant level keeps dropping
The expansion tank needs topping up every few weeks and there is nothing on the driveway to explain it. Coolant leaving a sealed system with no visible leak is the symptom worth taking seriously, because the places it can go without showing are the expensive ones.
Into the cylinders, where it leaves the exhaust as sweet-smelling steam that does not clear as the engine warms — distinct from ordinary condensation, which stops after a few minutes. Into the oil, which turns it the colour of coffee and destroys bearings quietly. Or into the cabin through the heater matrix, which fogs the windscreen with an oily film and leaves the passenger footwell damp.
Check the oil filler cap and the passenger footwell before assuming a hose. Both are free, both take seconds, and either one answers the question outright.
A pressure test is what finds the rest. Cold, pumped to the system's rated pressure, and watched: a system that holds is not leaking, and one that falls tells you roughly how fast.
