Problem only happens with the air conditioning on
Something else goes wrong — a rough idle, a stumble, a dip in power, a squeal — and it stops the moment the air conditioning is switched off. The compressor is the largest single load an engine picks up at idle, several horsepower arriving in one step, so the module raises idle speed to meet it before the clutch engages. That handshake is where these faults live: an engine that cannot make the extra air, a compressor dragging more than it should, or a request the engine never receives. Try it deliberately both ways and report which, because that one test separates an air conditioning fault from an engine one.

What this usually means
The compressor is the largest single load an engine picks up at idle — several horsepower arriving in one step — so the module raises idle speed to meet it before the clutch engages. That handshake is where these faults live.
Three things can go wrong with it, and they are separable. The engine cannot make the extra air, so idle sags or stalls when the load lands. The compressor is dragging more than it should, so the step is larger than the engine was told to expect. Or the request never reaches the engine, so no idle-up happens at all and the load arrives unannounced.
Try it deliberately both ways and report which, because that one test separates an air conditioning fault from an engine one — and it costs nothing.
A sag or stall on engagement points at the engine's idle control having no margin left: a fouled idle control valve, a sooted throttle body with a stale adaptation, or unmetered air. The same engine will usually also stumble when the heated rear window or headlights are switched on, which is worth checking because it proves the fault is the engine rather than the compressor.
A squeal on engagement is the belt — either tension, or a compressor that has become stiff and is more than the belt can turn.
And a dip in power at speed rather than at idle is usually normal. The compressor genuinely takes power, and on a small engine that is noticeable; many vehicles also cut the compressor briefly at full throttle by design.
