P2624: Injector Control Pressure Regulator Circuit Low

What to do

Expect either a no-start or an engine running roughly and noisily, depending which way the valve has failed.

Worth acting on promptly. The high-pressure oil pump that feeds this valve is an expensive part, and running it against a regulator that cannot be controlled loads it unnecessarily. The fault itself is usually a wiring one — the connector and the harness to the regulator — so it is not typically a large repair provided it is not left.

As at P2623: this is an oil-side fault on an engine where oil does the injecting, so do not let a diagnosis drift into the fuel system.

What this code means

The injector control pressure regulator circuit reads below its valid range — a short to ground, or a driver output that has failed closed. The system it belongs to is described at P2623.

Which way this presents depends on the valve's arrangement, and both directions are consequential on this engine. A regulator held fully open sends the oil pump's full output to the injectors, so injection control pressure runs high — which is P2288's condition, and it makes for a harsh, noisy engine and stresses the high-pressure oil circuit. Held closed, there is no pressure and the engine will not start.

Either way the pump is working against a valve it cannot control, and the high-pressure oil pump is not a cheap part. That is what makes this worth prompt attention rather than a wait-and-see, even though the fault is electrical.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
