U0209: Lost Communication With Seat Control Module B
What to do
The car drives normally and one front seat's powered adjustment will have stopped.
Check whether the airbag warning light is on. If the affected seat is the passenger one, this module may also carry the sensing that decides whether the passenger airbag fires — see U0208. If it is the driver's seat and the airbag light is still on, that suggests something wider than the seat and is worth mentioning.
If a seat has been out of the car for any reason — carpet, trim, floor repair, a retrofit — say so. A connector left unmated or a loom pinched under a seat rail during refitting is a very common cause and free to put right.
One thing to ask about before a replacement module is fitted: on many vehicles it must be coded to the car before it works at all, and your stored seat memory positions will be lost either way. A module fitted without coding behaves exactly like a faulty one, which leads to the wrong conclusion.
What this code means
The second seat control module has stopped being heard from. The occupant-classification point and the under-seat wiring argument are both at U0208 and apply here.
Module B is normally the other front seat, and which one carries the occupant sensing is the distinction that matters. On most vehicles the passenger seat is the one with classification sensing, because that is the airbag that has to be suppressed for a child seat; the driver's seat generally has position memory and adjustment but no such duty. So identifying which physical seat B is decides whether the airbag warning light is expected to be part of this fault or not — and an airbag lamp lit alongside a driver's-seat module fault is worth a second look, because it suggests something broader than one seat.
Seat memory is the other feature worth knowing about, and it produces a repair trap. Where the module stores seat, mirror and sometimes steering column positions per key or per driver profile, replacing it discards every stored profile — and on many vehicles the replacement must also be coded to the vehicle before it will function at all. A module fitted without coding behaves exactly like a faulty one, which is the same pattern the corpus records for engine and transmission modules.
As at U0208, the under-seat harness and its connectors are the first place to look. Seats are also removed for a great many unrelated jobs — carpet, floorpan repair, trim, retrofits — and refitting one with a connector unmated or a loom pinched under a rail is an ordinary way to produce this code.
