U05A4: Particulate Matter Sensor Received Invalid Data From Engine Control Module
What to do
Nothing will feel wrong with the car, and this one is easy to misread even in a workshop. The code is the soot sensor complaining about the engine computer, not the other way round — so it points at something upstream rather than at the sensor itself.
Ask for all the stored codes to be read together and treated as one picture. This is often the last entry in a list whose first entry is the real fault, and replacing the soot sensor named here is a common and expensive way to fix nothing.
The practical consequence is an emissions test failure rather than a breakdown. The particulate filter's self-check cannot run, so the readiness monitors never complete — the car passes on emissions and fails on not having finished checking itself. If a test is due, deal with this first.

Read the title in the right direction, because almost every other code in this family runs the other way and this one is worth the second look. The usual shape is the engine module received invalid data from some sensor. This one is a sensor complaining about the engine module. The complainant is the particulate matter sensor; the subject of the complaint is the ECM.
That is possible because this sensor is a small computer rather than a probe, as its lost-communication sibling at U02A3 explains — it has a heater, a burn-off cycle and its own controller. And it cannot do its job on its own measurements alone. It needs to be told exhaust temperature, engine load, whether a filter regeneration is running and whether the exhaust is wet, because:
- It must not heat its element while liquid water is present in the exhaust, which would crack it. Cold-start condensation is the reason, and only the engine module knows the exhaust has dried out.
- It must know when a regeneration is happening, since soot readings during one mean nothing.
- Its readings are only interpretable against engine load, so an absent or implausible load figure makes the whole measurement void.
So the fault is almost never in the sensor. This code points upstream — at the engine module's supply, at the network between them, or at whatever is making the ECM broadcast something implausible. Read every stored code before touching this sensor, because it is very often the last item in a list whose first item is the actual fault.
The consequence is the same as at U02A3 and just as easy to miss: the filter's efficiency monitor cannot run, readiness never completes, and a perfectly healthy vehicle fails an emissions test on an incomplete self-check.
