U0436: Invalid Data Received From Differential Control Module — Front
What to do
The car drives normally on tarmac. What you have lost is traction on slippery surfaces, and the loss is bigger than it sounds.
Without the locking differential, an ordinary open differential sends the power to whichever wheel has the least grip — so on wet grass, mud or snow, one wheel spins and the other does nothing. Do not rely on the car to get you up a slippery slope or out of a soft gateway, because that is exactly the situation this system existed for.
Traction control will help a little by braking the spinning wheel, but it is not a substitute.
One thing that is not a fault: these units get hot when working hard and release themselves on purpose until they cool. If you lost it during sustained low-speed work — towing on grass, repeated attempts up a slope — and it came back later, nothing is wrong.
Otherwise the wiring and connectors at the axle are the usual cause, since they sit under the car in the road spray and salt.
What this code means
The front differential control module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for the family's framing.
A controlled differential can vary how much torque goes to each wheel on an axle, either by locking the two together or by actively biasing torque toward the wheel with grip. What it publishes is how much locking or bias it is applying, and its temperature.
The failure default is release, for the same reason given at U0414: an unpredictably locking differential would be considerably worse than an open one. So the vehicle reverts to a conventional open differential.
That has a consequence people find counter-intuitive and worth stating plainly: an open differential sends torque to the wheel with the least grip. So on a slippery surface, one wheel spins uselessly while the other does nothing — which is exactly the behaviour the locking differential existed to prevent. The vehicle has not become slightly less capable; on a low-grip surface it has become substantially less capable, and a driver relying on it to get up a wet grass slope or out of a muddy gateway should expect not to.
Traction control partially compensates by braking the spinning wheel, so the vehicle may still make progress — but less effectively, and with heat going into the brakes rather than torque going to the ground.
Temperature is the other reported value and produces a non-fault worth recognising. These units heat up when working hard, and they protect themselves by releasing until they cool. A vehicle that lost its locking differential during sustained low-speed work and recovered later was behaving correctly.
The unit sits under the vehicle at the axle, so wiring, connectors and water ingress dominate its real faults.
