U0403: Invalid Data Received From Transfer Case Control Module
What to do
Expect a four-wheel-drive warning and stability control switched off.
The first thing to establish is whether the vehicle is still driving properly — a transfer case caught between modes can leave drive partly or completely disconnected. If the car feels like it is not pulling as it should, or makes noise from underneath, stop rather than continuing. If it drives normally, this is less urgent.
Do not use four-wheel drive or low range until it is fixed, and avoid difficult conditions — the vehicle may not be in the mode the dashboard claims.
Try the manufacturer's procedure for changing modes — usually stopping, selecting neutral, and switching — which occasionally reseats a transfer case caught mid-shift.
The fault is most often the position sensor or switch that tells the module which mode is engaged, or its wiring — all of which live under the vehicle in the road spray and salt, rather than the module itself.

A transfer case splits drive between front and rear axles, and the value it publishes that matters most to everything else is which mode it is in — two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive high, four-wheel drive low, or in transition.
That single value has an outsized effect, and the reason is stability control. A vehicle in low range has enormously different wheel speeds and torque for a given pedal position, and a stability control system acting on the wrong assumption about the driveline would intervene wrongly. So the systems downstream refuse to act on an implausible mode report — expect stability control disabled and a four-wheel drive warning.
The mode value is also frequently in transition rather than wrong, and that produces a fault worth recognising. A transfer case caught between modes — because a shift motor stalled, or the vehicle was moving when it should not have been — reports a position that is genuinely neither, and the receiving modules correctly reject it. The vehicle may be in a state where drive is partially or fully disconnected.
So the first practical question is whether drive is actually reaching the wheels, and the answer changes the urgency completely.
As throughout this family, the fault is usually upstream: the mode switch, the encoder or position sensor on the shift motor, or the wiring to them. The transfer case module reports where the mechanism says it is — and a position sensor that has failed makes it publish nonsense while the module and the mechanism are both fine.
The unit lives under the vehicle, so its connectors and wiring take road spray, salt and impact, which is where these faults usually are.
