What to do

Apply the parking brake every time you park, before you select P, and do not rely on P alone until this is repaired.

Your car selects gears electronically rather than through a cable, and this code means two parts of that system disagree about which gear is chosen. The car will usually protect itself — refusing to change gear, holding what it has, or declining to come out of Park — and those refusals are the system working.

The risk worth naming is a car that reports Park without being in it. The parking brake removes that risk entirely and costs nothing.

If the gear display is showing the wrong gear, or flashing, mention it specifically — that is the most useful single observation for whoever diagnoses it.

What this code means

Gear shift control module B is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for what an invalid-data code is and why the module it names is usually the messenger rather than the culprit.

A second gear shift control module means shift-by-wire with a redundant or split control path, and redundancy is the point rather than a detail.

With no cable between the lever and the gearbox, the vehicle's knowledge of which gear is selected is entirely electronic — and the consequence of getting it wrong includes a car that rolls when the driver believes it is in Park. So the function is duplicated, and the two paths are compared.

Which is what this code is: the comparison failing. One module is publishing a selected range the rest of the system cannot reconcile, and the safe response is to refuse the ambiguity — commonly by holding the current gear, refusing to leave Park, or dropping to a limited mode.

The most important consequence for the driver is about parking. A car that cannot confirm its range is a car whose Park cannot be trusted, which makes the parking brake the thing that actually holds it. See the corpus's park-related codes at P27E7 onward for the mechanical side.

Apply the parking brake before selecting Park, every time. It removes the vehicle's weight from the pawl and means a range fault cannot let the car roll.
