Instrument Cluster
A computer that draws gauges rather than a set of gauges wired to sensors — engine speed, road speed, temperature and fuel level all arrive as messages and are rendered. So gauges reading zero usually means the cluster is not receiving rather than that the sensors have failed. Two things live here that matter beyond the display: on many vehicles the immobiliser authorisation, so a silent cluster can mean a car that will not start, and the odometer, which must be transferred to any replacement — a recorded mileage that does not match a vehicle's history is a legal problem as well as a valuation one.
