Speech Recognition Module

Processes spoken commands. The microphone is a separate part — usually in the headlining above the windscreen, the mirror housing, or the overhead console — and confusing the two is the commonest mistake here.

The distinguishing evidence is whether the system responds to being asked. A vehicle that acknowledges the voice button with a chime, a prompt or a listening indicator has a working module that cannot hear you, which is a microphone problem. One that does nothing at all when the button is pressed is the module.

Windscreen replacement is the event to ask about, since the microphone and its wiring sit in the headlining directly above the screen and are disturbed whenever it comes out.

And a modern caution that saves whole diagnoses: much speech recognition no longer happens in the vehicle. Where speech is sent to an off-board service, "voice control has stopped working" can be an expired connected-services subscription, a poor mobile signal, or a service the manufacturer has withdrawn — not a fault at all, and no amount of testing will find one.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
