Door Switch
Reports whether a door is open. One bit of information that drives the interior lights, the door-ajar warning, alarm arming, central locking logic — and, most consequentially, whether the vehicle is allowed to go to sleep.
That last item produces the complaint nobody connects to a door. A parked modern vehicle powers down in stages over several minutes, and only once it believes it is shut. A door the car thinks is open holds it awake all night, drawing many times its proper standing current — so the battery is flat in a few days on a vehicle whose battery and charging system are both perfectly healthy. A flat-battery complaint alongside a door switch fault is a complete diagnosis, and worth saying before anyone sells a battery, an alternator and an afternoon of drain testing.
On most modern vehicles it is no longer a separate switch at all but part of the door latch assembly, so the repair is a latch and a door strip. Being at the door edge in the open air, corrosion from water and road salt is the usual failure — and rear latches, used far less often, corrode undisturbed and fail seasonally.
