Remote Function Actuation Module
The vehicle's radio receiver for its keys and fobs, and on keyless vehicles the handler for proximity detection.
Losing it produces a complaint that sounds nothing like a network fault: "my key has stopped working". The usual response is a new battery, then a new fob, then reprogramming — none of which changes anything, because the fob is transmitting perfectly to a receiver nobody can hear.
The distinguishing test is free. Almost every vehicle has a mechanical key blade inside the fob and a lock barrel, often under a cap on the driver's door handle. If the mechanical key opens the car while the fob does nothing, the fob is not the problem — and a second fob behaving identically is close to conclusive, since two fobs do not fail at once but one receiver does. On keyless vehicles there is nearly always a backup start position — a slot, or a defined spot to hold the fob against — which reads the key inductively and works with a dead fob battery; finding out what it is before being stranded is worth doing.
Two causes deserve naming: aftermarket electrics (alarms, trackers, dashcams, cheap chargers) genuinely deafen these receivers, and they are frequently mounted high in the vehicle where a leaking sunroof drain or screen seal reaches them.
