Fiat MultiAir
1.4 L · inline-4 · turbocharged · petrol · 2009–present
Also known as: multiair, 1.4 multiair, 1.4 turbo multiair, t-jet, 940a, 1.4 turbo fiat
Fiat's 1.4-litre turbocharged four with MultiAir — an electro-hydraulic system that controls the intake valves directly rather than through a fixed camshaft profile, letting the engine vary lift and timing continuously and dispense with a conventional throttle in some conditions. It is genuinely distinctive technology, fitted across Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Jeep.
The MultiAir actuator unit itself is the characteristic failure. It sits on top of the head, is oil-pressure driven, and is acutely sensitive to oil condition and level — degraded or low oil produces rough running, misfires and limp mode, with codes that name the system rather than the cause. On any MultiAir complaint, oil condition is the first diagnostic input, and the unit is expensive enough that this is worth establishing before ordering one.
The turbocharged versions also bring the usual intake-valve carbon and, in the Abarth applications, a duty cycle that finds any weakness in the cooling system quickly.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
