Ford's 2.0-litre direct-injected turbo four — the engine of the Focus ST, Mondeo, Escape, Edge, Explorer and S-Max, and the volume petrol option across the mid-range for over a decade.
The fault that generated the most attention is coolant intrusion into the cylinders, associated with cracking in the cylinder-head coolant jacket on a defined range of the earlier design. It presents as unexplained coolant loss with no external leak, sometimes with misfire or a sweet exhaust smell, and it is the reason a coolant-level complaint on one of these deserves a pressure test early rather than a top-up.
Beyond that, the themes are those of any direct-injection turbo: intake-valve carbon, high-pressure fuel-pump and injector wear, and turbocharger life that tracks oil condition closely. Later versions moved to a twin-scroll turbocharger and added port injection alongside direct, which addresses the carbon issue — so establishing the version matters before predicting it.
