i-VTEC is a badge, not an engine. It names Honda's variable valve timing and lift, and Honda fits it to everything — our rows show it on 1.2 to 3.5 litres across the K, R, L and J families, in Honda and Acura.
Establish the code, which Honda stamps on the block: K24, R18, L15, J35. Every useful answer follows from it and none follows from the badge.
What the badge does describe is a real mechanism worth understanding, because it produces a symptom people misread. The system switches between camshaft profiles at a set engine speed, and the switch is audible and felt — a change in engine note and a surge of response, usually somewhere above 4,000 rpm. That is the design working, not a fault, and it is the single most common thing new owners ask about.
⚑ When it genuinely fails it fails the other way: nothing happens. The engine simply never switches, and the car feels flat at high revs while running perfectly below. The cause is almost always oil — the mechanism is hydraulic, it is actuated through a solenoid and a fine screen, and low or dirty oil stops it long before it stops anything else. A blocked VTEC solenoid screen is a cheap part and a common one.
So an i-VTEC engine that has lost its top end is an oil question first, and that is genuinely useful across every family wearing the badge.
