T5, T6, D3, D4 and D5 are Volvo's output badges, not engines, and this is the case in the catalogue where a badge changes meaning most completely without changing its name.
⚑ A T5 is a five-cylinder turbo on a P1, P2 or P3 car and a FOUR-cylinder on an SPA car. Volvo moved its whole range to the 2.0 four-cylinder Drive-E family in 2013 and kept the badges, so the same two characters name two entirely different engines either side of that line — different block, different head, different cam drive, different everything.
The badge encodes output, not architecture. T is petrol and D diesel; the number is a tier. So D4 on a 2011 V70 is a five-cylinder and D4 on a 2016 XC60 is a four, and a parts listing, a forum thread or a repair procedure written for one is wrong about the other.
Establish the model year and the platform first — P1, P2, P3, SPA or CMA — and then the engine family, which is what this catalogue files Volvo's engines under and where the actual faults live.
What the badge does tell you reliably is the fuel and roughly the output, and on the older cars a T5 badge means a five-cylinder, which is itself a strong hint: Volvo's five-cylinders sound unmistakable and have their own well-documented character.
