Mazda L8-DE (MZR / Duratec 1.8)

The 1.8 of the Mazda L-series — one engine under three badges. Mazda calls it the MZR, Ford the Duratec HE, and Volvo simply the 1.8; it is in the MX-5 NC, the Mazda5, the Mondeo Mk3, the Volvo S40 and C30.

That shared parentage is the reason to have this page. A fault documented on a Mondeo forum describes the engine in an MX-5 and an S40 exactly, and parts cross over far more than the badges suggest. Establish the engine rather than the marque before dismissing anything you read about it.

It is chain-driven, not belt-driven — which catches out anyone applying a Mazda or Ford service schedule from the previous generation — and the chain and its tensioner are the wear item, announcing themselves as a rattle at start-up that settles with oil pressure.

The variable valve timing actuator on the intake camshaft is the other recurring item: when its phaser or the oil feed to it is dirty the engine sets a timing correlation code and loses low-end response. On this family that is an oil-condition problem far more often than a failed part, because the phaser is hydraulic and runs on whatever is in the sump.
