P0480: Koelventilator 1 — stuurcircuit
Wat te doen
Watch the temperature gauge, especially in traffic. A car with a failed cooling fan will often behave perfectly at speed and overheat within minutes of stopping, because at speed the airflow does the fan's job. If the gauge climbs, do not sit in a queue — keep moving if it is safe, or stop and let it cool. Overheating causes head gasket and cylinder head damage that costs many times the repair.
Wat deze code betekent
A fault in the control circuit for the primary cooling fan. This sits among the emission codes because engine temperature governs fuelling and emissions, but its practical significance is thermal: a fan that will not run means the engine has no cooling at all in traffic, where there is no airflow through the radiator to do the job instead.
The distinction that matters is between a fan that never runs and one that runs constantly. Never running is the dangerous case and is usually the relay, the control wiring or the module output. Running constantly is usually a relay whose contacts have welded closed, or a control circuit shorted to ground — irritating and hard on the battery, but not a threat to the engine.
Check the relay before the fan motor. It is far cheaper, fails more often, and a fan that does not run tells you nothing on its own about which of the two has failed.
