Try switching the engine off and restarting once you are safely stopped. If the gearbox then shifts normally for a while before reverting, it is protecting itself from a fault elsewhere rather than being mechanically stuck — and that is genuinely useful information for the garage.
Ask what other codes are stored before any transmission work is agreed. Many gearboxes deliberately hold one gear when something else is wrong, so the stuck gear is often the symptom rather than the fault.
Drive gently and keep the journey short. In a single high gear the transmission works harder from rest, which builds heat, and heat is what turns a repairable fault into a rebuilt gearbox.
Say when the transmission fluid was last changed, if ever. It is the cheapest thing on the list and a common cause.

The transmission is in fourth gear and will not leave it.
Before diagnosing this as a fault of its own, there is one thing that must be established, because it changes everything: many transmissions deliberately hold a single gear when they lose confidence in themselves.
That is limp home. Faced with a pressure fault, a speed sensor it cannot trust, or a slipping element, the module stops shifting and holds a mid-range gear — high enough to drive at road speed, low enough to pull away. Fourth is a common choice.
So a car stuck in fourth may have a perfectly healthy shift mechanism and a problem somewhere else entirely. Read every stored code before touching the transmission. If a pressure, sensor or slip code is stored alongside, that is the fault and this is the vehicle's response to it.
Where this code stands alone, the mechanism itself is the subject:
- A shift solenoid stuck, so the hydraulic circuit for that gear cannot be released.
- A valve stuck in the valve body, which does the same thing further along.
- Debris in the fluid holding a valve off its seat — and debris means something upstream is wearing.
The tell that separates limp home from a mechanical stick is the ignition cycle. A limp-home vehicle often shifts normally for a while after being restarted, then reverts; a stuck valve does not care.
