P2196: Lambdasonde — signaal verschoven of vast op rijk, bank 1 sensor 1
Wat te doen
Expect hesitation, a flat spot and possibly pinking under load, because the engine is being starved of fuel by a sensor incorrectly claiming it has too much. Avoid sustained heavy load until it is fixed — a lean mixture under load runs hot and can cause detonation damage. Ask for the sensor's wiring to be checked as well as the sensor: a short between the signal and heater wires pins the reading rich and is a harness repair, not a part.
Wat deze code betekent
The upstream sensor on bank 1 reports a rich mixture and will not report anything else. The full argument is under P2195 and holds in mirror image, including the essential point: the code describes a sensor that has stopped responding, and the engine ends up doing the opposite of what the name suggests.
Here the module believes the mixture is permanently rich, so it removes fuel. The sensor does not respond, so it removes more, until the fuel trims run to their negative limit and stay there. The engine ends up running genuinely lean because a sensor is stuck saying rich — which produces hesitation, a flat spot under acceleration and, on a hot engine under load, a real risk of detonation.
That makes this the more urgent of the two stuck codes. A stuck-lean sensor over-fuels, which is expensive; a stuck-rich sensor under-fuels, which is expensive and runs the engine hot at exactly the moments it is working hardest.
The cause list differs slightly from the lean variant, in a way that matters. An exhaust leak cannot produce a stuck-rich reading — leaks admit air, which reads lean. So the mechanical alternatives narrow, and what remains is the sensor itself, its wiring, or something genuinely putting fuel where it should not be. A short between the signal wire and the heater circuit is a specific and well-known cause of a signal pinned at the rich end, and it is a wiring repair rather than a sensor.
