Wat te doen
Ask what work the exhaust has had, and by whom. This code means the emissions catalyst does not behave the way the vehicle expects — often because a replacement of the wrong specification was fitted, sometimes at a previous owner's garage.
If you bought the car recently, it is worth raising with the seller. A non-standard catalyst is a known cost-saving substitution and this is how it comes to light.
Do not let it sit. The emissions system escalates when it cannot meet its target — first warnings, then a speed limit, then a refusal to restart. Fixing it early is considerably less disruptive than fixing it at the roadside.
Expect the answer to be a catalyst replacement, which is a significant cost, so a second opinion is reasonable before committing.
Wat deze code betekent
The selective catalytic reduction catalyst fitted to the vehicle is not the one the control module expects.
This code says the wrong part is fitted, which is an unusual thing for a vehicle to be able to detect — and it does so by behaviour rather than by identification. There is no part number to read. The module infers it from how the catalyst performs: its conversion efficiency, how it stores and releases ammonia, how it responds to temperature. A substitute with different chemistry or a different volume behaves measurably differently, and that signature is what sets this code.
Two situations produce it, and they need distinguishing.
- A genuinely incorrect part — an aftermarket catalyst of the wrong specification, a used unit from a different model, or a repair that fitted what was available rather than what was correct.
- A correct part that has degraded until it behaves like the wrong one. Thermal damage, oil contamination or sulphur poisoning all reduce a catalyst's activity, and a sufficiently aged catalyst is indistinguishable from an inadequate one.
The second case is more common than the first on a vehicle with no repair history, so ask what has been done to the exhaust before concluding anyone fitted the wrong thing.
Expect this to escalate. An SCR system that cannot meet its target moves through the inducement stages, so left alone this becomes a speed limit and eventually a vehicle that will not restart.
